What is thermal printing?
Thermal transfer printers use heat and a ribbon to transmit images onto specially treated thermal paper or thermal labels. For applications that require print longevity or involve outdoor exposure or harsh environments, we have solutions to meet your needs.
Direct thermal printers, on the other hand, use heat from the printhead to image your label or paper for applications that don’t require longevity—for instance, shipping labels, one-time-use products, and indoor environments.
Traditional impact printers, by comparison, imprint text or images onto a substrate using ink, toner, and ribbons.
With fewer parts, less complexity, and more flexibility, thermal printers are becoming an increasingly popular choice for busy environments that have high-volume print needs.
Speed and efficiency
Fast printing: Thermal printers are fast, so they’re particularly useful when time is crucial—at retail checkouts, or generating shipping labels.
More uptime: The reliability of thermal printers means almost no print failures and always-there availability.
Reliability and durability
Long lifespan: Thermal printers are designed to be durable with a longer operational life, even in demanding environments.
Consistent quality: The ‘contactless’ heat-based process of direct thermal printers makes the substrate less prone to smudging or fading, leading to consistently high-quality printouts, essential for barcodes and labels.
Compact and space-saving
Smaller footprint: Thermal printers are often more compact than other types of printers, making them ideal for environments with limited space.
Portability: Their smaller size makes them portable, allowing for mobile printing solutions in settings like field services, healthcare, or on-the-go retail.
Lower operating costs
No ink or toner: Using mainly thermal paper or thermal transfer ribbons (there’s no need for ink or toner cartridges) thermal printers can help reduce your cost of consumables.
Minimal maintenance: With fewer moving parts and no ink cartridges to replace, thermal printers generally require less maintenance, helping to lower your service costs.
